College Sailing...
The sport of College Sailing is governed by the Intercollegiate
Yacht Racing Association of North
America (ICYRA). This national body represents over 200 sailing
programs and colleges and
universities nation-wide. The teams are divided into seven geographic
districts nationwide,
including the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association,
which represents West Coast
teams including Cal. The format of college sailing is primarily
short course racing, placing a
premium on tactical ability instead of pure boat specd over long
distance courscs. A typical regatta
can include as many as twenty races, so consistency over the course
of the entire regatta is also
important. National Championships are held each year in Sloops,
Singlehandeds, Dingies, Team
Racing, and Women's divisions.
The Pacific Coast...
The PCIYRA is one of the most competitive districts in the country.
In addition to the Cal team,
other prominent teams include UC Irvine, Stanford, University
of Southern California, and the
University of Hawaii. Regattas in this district are pnmanly sailed
in Flying Juniors, and frequently
include more tnan 20 boats.
The Cal Sailing Team...
The Cal sailing team is a student run team representing the University
of California at Berkeley in
tne PCIYRA. Sailing at Cal is a club sport, and is student run.
Most of the $30,000 budget raised
each year is organizod by the sailors themselves. The team's 20
members practice over 15 hours
per week at the Berkeley Marina We race almost every weekend in
regatta all over the state of
California. The team also travels to the East Coast to compete
against schools from other districts.
The Cal team has played host to several prestigious regattas including
the annual Stoney Burke
Intersectional. Cal is proud of it's student run nature. Members
of the Cal team excel and learn, not
only in sailing ability, but in sportsmanship and in being part
of a team.
Recruiting...
The Cal Sailing Team like most sailing teams is able to help interested
high school students with
the admissions process. We are able to submit a list of resruits
who are then earmarked for special
attention. As with most athletic programs, there is no way to
know how much influence we have.
Nonetheless our recruits have historically been fairly successful
in the entering proress and we are
able to offer assistanse with methods of appeal and differed admission
which are genelally quite
successful. We encourage any interested sailors or parents to
come visit the school and spend a
day practicing with the team.
